I just received my copy in the mail and I'm overwhelmed with the outstanding imagery and techniques that the three artists of Digital Atelier offer in this book by Karin Schminke, Dorothy Simpson Krause and Bonny Lhotka. These are the three artists of Digital Atelier, and their website is mindblowing ([...] Don't forget to check the links to the individual artist websites. They started with professional, expensive inkjet printers through corporate sponsorships and grants, and it took ten years since the time these artists started experimenting and exhibiting for the technology to catch up with consumer inkjet printers.This book is process oriented and is recommended for intermediate to advanced mixed-media artists and photographers who want to explore digital artmaking. They show you how to use your inkjet printer, albeit more expensive and professional models, to print on practically any material: fabrics, plastics, metals, papers, etc. The past few weeks, I've been studying the techniques and I've ordered the InkAid product so I can create my own substrates for the low-end desktop printer, the Epson C84 with Durabright inks. InkAid is a special precoat and it was developed by the Digital Atelier artists ([...] I've been able to create interesting prints with my printer that neither the artists nor InkAid support - but I'm happy to report that they've both been very responsive and helpful with my questions.You'll still need to know the basics of digital design and composition, but if you ever wanted to make your artwork explode onto textures, layers, collage and 3-D surfaces - this book is it. This is a process-oriented book so you will still have to develop your own digital imagery, compose the layers, and prepare the surfaces before you can print. You will need to have some experience with image editing techniques such as Photoshop, and how to scan, capture or upload images to your computer. This book is concerned with output - and intimate knowledge with the capabilities of your desktop and wide- or large-format printers is necessary. This is not a quick artmaking process. Precoating to prepare various materials for printing on requires time to dry the layers but the effort is worth it.You will learn various image transfer and "emulsion" transfer (similar to Polaroid) techniques as well as some unusual printmaking and layering ideas: gelatin transfers, frescos, digital overprinting and underprinting, and collage. There's a whole chapter on transferring or printing images onto fabrics for both wearable and non-wearable art. The three artists offer numerous options to pursue and don't promise that their techniques will do everything. Amazingly, they do offer a lot.You can also work on your printed images with traditional art media - such as pastels, colored pencils, acrylics, even encaustics, but those techniques are not detailed too much. This book assumes you have your own expertise but it offers more possibilities for traditional and digital artists. They position the inkjet printer as a well-placed tool in the mixed-media studio. All the techniques build in complexity and they are demonstrated very well in step-by-step photographs and text. Examples of artwork is numerous and varied and so the art gallery is outstanding.As a new, self-taught collage artist, I am inspired to rework my best images and create new versions on various "canvases." This book as a great addition to my reference library. The only con to the book, and it's minor at that is some confusion I have with the materials needed for printing on or using as "carriers." Specifically, the list of polycarbonate, plastic sheets, polyester films. I have to take notes to keep track of which technique to try first as I shop for more materials but I am excited to start.This book has been long-awaited by digital artists and I congratulate Digital Atelier on the launch and applaud the three artists for their generosity.

I was recently introduced to the work of Dorothy Simpson Krause. In looking through her stunning portfolio on her site ([...] I found a reference to this book. I had just purchased a wide-format Epson printer, so finding this book was like mana from heaven. The book is a fantastic overview of what you can (and can't) do combining digital and analog printing techniques. For each technique presented, the author covers caveats for particular printers, as well as necessary tools. Techniques are presented in a very straightforward manner, with many chapters including an aside of "creative explorations" for you to further explore the aforementioned techniques. The color plates alone are worth the price of the book. This book is a must have addition to any digital art studio bookshelf.

As a graphic designer, I spend most of my time on the computer and have sorely missed creating with my hands. This book is bringing me back to that in an exciting way. Contrary to some reviewers I am very glad the book doesn't indulge too much in Photoshop instruction (although it does give information about Photoshop that is most relevant to the processes, like print specifications). That would be a waste of space because there are a gazillion Photoshop books out there, but these techniques are much more rare and need as much space as possible to teach them. The authors do a great job of this. Very clear, thoughtful and succint writing. No wasted words.To experiment with all these processes could take years, which means to me that the book is a valuable investment. The imagery is extremely inspiring (especially Krause's). It's much more sophisticated than the cover art would lead you to believe. There are some images where I still wonder "how did she do THAT?" when it comes to things like assembling clear polycarbonate (which is the only material I'm having trouble finding) over a tin panel or a mirror, but that doesn't lessen the quality or usefulness of the book. I hope that, someday, they come out with a second edition.

DITTO....Great find and great book, I teach university art Printmaking in Monoprint and this book is a great find, my entire class working in Digital format mixed media also bought it and I required them to do so as class text....I told them not to buy from our expensive book store, they all bought used copies at substantial savings...THANKS AMAZON!

I bought this book about a year ago, and have found it very useful. Useful in re-thinking what printmaking is and can be, useful in fairly good details on some quite interesting techniques. This isn't for the beginner I don't think but as I have my own etching press and a good printer with a straight thru path it opened up a world of new possibilities to me.Pros: A huge variety of processes. Lots of illustrations of working with the materials.Con: Some processes do require access to expensive equipment, but with some imagination this isn't as limiting as first appears. Some references and specific equipment is dated, most OK.I've seen criticism of their art - but that's not even relevant, art is about PROCESS, and the biggest positive about this book is that it is all about process. One page alone started me down a road of exploration that has lasted 10 months now - and I don't see the end. Four years of graduate art school didn't excite me this much. [...]

Digital Art Studio: Techniques for Combining Inkjet Printing with Traditional Art Materials provides a wide range of interesting and creative techniques for digital imaging that I anticipate will help me to move beyond making simple digital prints that all look exactly alike to creating unique, one of a kind originals. Be warned that some of them require some very specialized materials that aren't cheap or easy to locate, but I anticipate that, for me personally, the results will be worth the effort and I hope will take my work to a new level.
