I first became acquainted with Mary Lancaster's books in 2016 when I read VIENNA WALTZ. That was an entertaining HR set in 1814 Vienna, had an appealing heroine and hero, a spy mystery to solve, and a warm, loving group of siblings for the heroine to interact with, and, oh, let's not forget the lovable dog. I liked it well enough to read a few more HRs by her but never found anything superior to that first one.Lancaster has a formula she follows and so a reader can predict everything that is going to happen within the first quarter or less of the book. In addition, her stories all start out strong, catching my interest, but then they start to become cluttered with happenings that should be exciting but instead bore me the more I read.This start to a new series (which doesn't feel fresh and new but more a continuation of her old ones) has a lot in common with other books of hers I've read. Close-knit siblings, rambunctious dog, innocent heroine, mutual attraction of H and h which must have a long intermission of misunderstandings, with "I love you but you do't love me" or "I love you but I can't marry you because [insert issue here]", a mystery with lots of skulking, running around and chasing, usually an abduction, all this followed finally by the declarations of love and clarifications of any misunderstandings, with a final scene of the consummation of the H and h's love and a ride off into the sunset of the HEA.I agree with anyone reading this review and thinking I shouldn't complain because formula and predictability is the way of most romance novels. And I already knew that Lancaster's books no longer appeal to me. But I thought that, since this was the start to a new series, there would be something new about it. Yet the only difference I could find in this new story from the others I've read by Lancaster is that the heroine's financially-struggling parents are hoping to marry off the heroine's sister to a rich duke. A rich duke who turns out to be our hero.The heroine and the duke meet up accidentally as they are both on the way to her home, neither one knowing the identity of the other. There's a mystery that bonds the two as they try to solve it. There's the messed-up romance, as the duke is expected to offer for one sister but is now in love with the other, our heroine. And our heroine is a bit of a Cinderella in the family, shuffled to the back of the line of importance in the family. There are lots of secondary characters. There's a secondary romance.All of this is presented in a competent but uninspired way. There's no sparkle to the dialogue, no originality to the plot. Characters are shallow and underdeveloped. I'm done with Lancaster. My hopes that this new series would bring new ideas were shattered.
Destined to be a spinster, Charlotte Maybury has accepted her position as plain and unmarketable in the marriage mart. Traveling with her brothers, she arrives at a deserted inn that looks as if the owner just disappeared into the mist. Also arriving to seek shelter, is Alexander. Their final destination is the same-but neither are aware of this fact.The two of them immediately bond over the mystery of the missing innkeeper. Alex seems to be the only man to truly see her and he loves what he sees. Through a few mishaps and misunderstandings, the two of them finally find their way to each other and happiness.
After retrieving her brothers Richard, George and Horatio from school they stop at The Heart Inn for the night. The Inn is completely vacant. So her and her brothers make themselves at home and will wait for the innkeeper to return. They find a pot of stew recently cooked, bread and cheese and they prepare to have a meal when another guest arrives. They all set and have a dinner together while wondering were the innkeeper could be. Not knowing that the other quest is Alexander The Duke of Alvan who is on his way to there home to become betroth to there older sister Tomasina. Alvan and Charlotte have an immediate attraction to each other. When they both meet up again at the Overton home they realize with despair that Alex is there to propose to Tomasina. Alvan is attracted to Charlotte and Charlotte is attacked to Alvan.The story is Okay it just takes them to long to get together. The I can't be with The Duke goes on until the very end of the story. Charlotte has been raised as the middle sister to believe she is not as beautiful or talented as her older sister and her younger sister. Her parent have set her aside so they can give the other two a season. So she never feels worthy even when Alvan proposes to her the first time she refuses.The story lacks sensual romance but I did like Alvan and Charlotte. They made a very good couple. I just the author had concerted more on the romance and the relationship building then the Angst. This is a Clean Romance one brief sexual encounter after they are married. Only a few lines. So if you are looking for a Clean Romance with Lots of Angst this is for you. For myself I like sensual romance with the H/H working together to overcome obstacles that try to keep them apart. Instead of staying apart and denying there love.
THE DESERTED HEART has captured my heart! I loved this story, so much, and am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series!Our Heroine, Charlotte, is a such a strong character! Kind-hearted, witty, and fun, she captures the attention of our handsome, mysterious, and swoonworthy Hero, Alexander. Mary Lancaster has an amazing ability to create strong and memorable characters!I loved the lively children in this book, and Spring, the dog, is just delightful! A fantastic read that made my heart smile, THE DESERTED HEART is not to be missed - Five Glittering Stars!
