The kindle version of this book seems to have reproductions of the original illustrations - in color. We really enjoy the addition of these... It really adds to the written descriptions of the birds. Not all birds in the book have a corresponding illustration - but most of them do.As far as the writing and content, we loved it. My son (just turned 6) had developed an interest in birds, so when I saw this book - I thought it would be a great way to learn more about them, get our nightly reading in, and begin the switch to some chapter books. This book worked great for all three of those purposes. I also love the values/character the book blends in. It had made us big Burgess fans... We are on to the Seashore book now. :)

Beware! I don't know if I received a different version of this book than the other reviewers, but the font is so very tiny that I am not able to read it comfortably, even with reading glasses on. It is smaller than 10pt. It appears that the printer saved money by printing as many words on the page as possible in order to use less paper. It is very uncomfortable to read. I was immediately disappointed.

This version has no illustrations. Also, it’s formatted strangely as if it’s a condensed version. The print is all centered, the chapters start right after one another without starting on a new page, there’s no copyright page(it just goes right into the story) and the strangest this of all is that the back cover blurb seems to describe the Burgess Animal Book not the Bird Book. Amazon did accept the return.

I should have paid better attention to the other reviews. The copy I received has NO illustrations. The book I had as a child was 5"x7"x2" and had beautiful color illustrations. The stories are still charming, but the type is very small, and without the illustrations, it's easy to lose interest. I'll keep it, and continue to look for the one from childhood that I long for.

I guess this is what you would call a living book?It teaches you so much about many different birds without feeling like it's doing anything more than telling a story. My 6 year old loves for me to read this, but she is a book lover already.I have paired it with out Zoology Flying Creatures of the 5th Day cirriculum and the National Geographic Backyard Bird Guide. Reading this made me want to learn more.I borrowed it from the library for many weeks before buying so I was aware there weren't beautiful color pictures. That is why I often pair it with the field guide so we can see colored pictures also.

I bought this book for my 1st grade son and couldn't put it down myself! I thoroughly enjoyed this literary nature study. The language isn't difficult for young readers, and yet in no way does it talk down to them either. My son learned so much that I didn't even realize he had retained. Many times now we will be walking outside and he will point out something in nature that we read about in the book. Delightful book for all ages!

I expected beautiful pictures throughout the book to help hold my kids attention. All this copy had is a few black and white photos. Disappointing.

Fabulous old fashioned oral reading with great educational value! Great for homeschoolers and parents who want to really educate their children on birds in a delightful way. The knowledge of birds are woven so much into the story line that it is caught without much effort. The technical readers read well without distracting from the story. We use it for our multi-handicapped blind daughter that functions at about 7-8 year old. She is captivated by the story. We follow up the stories with a CD of bird songs. Highly recommend it.
