The typical "exercise" in this book is to suggest the teacher find the child an age-appropriate maze, try drumming, painting, or playing with ice cubes. A second-grader functioning at grade level would find most of the ideas and stories babyish. The content barely touches on self-regulation or mindfulness along the lines of realizing you feel x but controlling your behavior or helping yourself change your feelings. Instrad, almost all of the content involves exploring sensory stimulation in ways appropriate for preschoolers or children that do not interact with people around them. I am skeptical that the ideas would help a child with ADHD or one who's issues involve reacting appropriately to peers. But if you are looking for ways to help ages 2-5 with sensory processing disorder and sensory reactivity, it may be worthwhile. My low rating is because it has been mislabeled and mis-sold as content appropriate for a wider audience, when it really isn't about either self-regulation or mindfulness, but rather not melting down in stimulating sensory situations.

I'm an pediatric Occupational Therapist and these are techniques that I use with the kiddos I work with! It's written by an OT who's presented nationally about these effective evidence based strategies. This is the only book that I know of that clearly explains from a neurological/primitive reflex perspective why some of our kiddos have melt downs. Usually it’s because their flight/fight system is being turned on by something they perceive inaccurately in their environment. So you’ll see kids who are constantly in a state of reflexively responding (looks like tantrums or meltdowns). They are constantly triggered by their environment in some way, and a lot of times transitions between one place to another (e.g. car to store, house to school, etc) triggers anxiety and over-reactions because of fear of being exposed to an “assaultive” environment. So this book provides ways to help slow the brain down so it has time to accurately process the environment, as well as accurate assess own body vitals, in order to make an appropriate response. This book offers practical activities to do and teach your child strategies to eventually internalize these tools. I highly recommend this book for any kid who tantrums, has melt downs, or is perceived as stubborn or anxious.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but this wasn’t it. It does have activities for kids to help them become more aware of their person, which is what I was needing- but it also includes a lot of things for various issues, not just being aware of your person. So, only about a third of the book is even aimed toward my ADHD child. Only about a third of that is useful for us specifically. So, it provides a couple helps for him, but wasn’t as comprehensive on self-regulating and mindfulness as I needed it to be. Definitely a help, but not as much as was needed.

Not a book for ADHD kids and there are barely any worksheets in here. The exercises are ridiculous. Have your kid drink water and talk about it. Have your kid eat a snack and talk about it. Have your kid eat a popsicle. Play music while your kid swings. Have your kid do some wall pushups.

Great book.

Dr. Gibbs presented to our special education cooperative and was thoroughly knowledgeable about the subject matter or self regulation. There are so many easy and practical ideas for use in the classroom or in individual session in this book. I work with children with autism, down syndrome and other cognitive challenges. I am always looking for new and practical ideas. The activities take minimal to no prep time and can be adapted for various levels of understanding.
