This book lists synonyms for descriptive words for people. I've used a thesaurus before when searching for words, but this book seems to choose words that could give more punch to your writing. It would speed up the process because you would have less words to decide from to get the biggest impact.The narrower list helps in making the choices easier for writing. The title clearly states that it is a list of words, and it is. The words are placed into categories. In the front of the Kindle version of the book is a list of words. You click on the word, and it quickly takes you to the list of words that go with that word. This would save time of flipping through pages or looking something up online if you wanted to write away from a computer.I plan to use this list more extensively as I develop my novel.The author works in the publishing industry. So, I feel her choice of words would be good to know from that standpoint as well.Note: I received a review copy of this book.
I had such hopes for this book, but it was a complete disappointment. With all this talk about describing personality traits and creating unforgettable characters, I expected it to be more than just a bunch of words. But that was all it was - nothing more, nothing less. This book - for lack of a better word - is a list of synonyms for 67 words. Being a fan of big words, a lot of these already know - and they are easily accessible online or via websites such as dictionary.com. I guess having them all here in one place is a good idea, but I can't imagine paying $2.99 for what amounts to a long list of words.Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. This is a short list of synonyms for traits that characters may possess in a novel or book. The list is far from being exhaustive and a browser search will likely give you more options. If you're a novice writer, having a list of synonyms can help, however, if you want to really "flesh out" characters, I would recommend the Positive/Negative Trait Thesaurus'. I think it's a very good idea, listing attitudes and moods. Wish it had included words for physical descriptions of people too. Would have been even more helpful to writers in speeding up their vivid description of scene and character. As the book has a limited number of synonyms per word (less than half found in a standard thesaurus), more care should have been taken regarding accuracy and relevance. e.g.: ANGRY - crisp accurate words like ‘irate’ ‘cross’ and pique’ are missing, whereas 'rambunctious', which is boisterous, not angry, finds its way in. A good attempt though.Got the book as an advance Review copy
I can see how this might be helpful at times when writing, yet I wasn't bowled over by it, either. If you have trouble thinking of great words to describe your characters, it might come in handy.I was given a copy of this in exchange for my honest review.
I like these kind of books. I use them when I write. There could be a lot more words here, but it is useful. The one thing that the book should have is a Table of Contents that can be clicked on to get to the word faster. This is a review for Story Cartel.
